"For in Him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28)

Sing Servant

SheepGood Shepherd
by Eleanor van der Merwe

Early in the morning David left the flock with a shepherd, loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions. When Eliab, David's oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, "Why have you come here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the desert?"   1 Samuel 17:20,28

David has to go to war to defeat Goliath. Great victory! But what about the sheep? They are not many, but how will they get to the pen? They will not follow a stranger. And who will risk his life for them when the bear and the lion or the wolf hunts?

The hired hand doesn't own the sheep, but he will not abandon them. He knows that song, the one about the green pasture and the quiet waters. And he knows the One who is like David, the One who lays down his life for his sheep.

"Feed my sheep and my lambs. Take good care of them".

Arrow Straight as an Arrow
by Eleanor van der Merwe

In the morning Jonathan went out to the field for his meeting with David. He had a small boy with him and he said to the boy, "Run and find the arrows I shoot". As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. When the boy came to the place where Jonathan's arrow had fallen, Jonathan called out after him, "Isn't the arrow beyond you?"    1 Samuel 20: 35-37

One can see them now: the attractive crown prince and the little boy skipping alongside him. What a privilege! He has been chosen to go with.

There the arrow flies. It finishes its powerful parabole and hits the earth trembling. What is it with his hero today? Of cause he knows where the arrow has fallen. But soon everything is all right again. The beautiful bow is put into his little hands to be carried back to the city.

The arrow is just a secret code, to tell David to flee for his life. The boy is blissfully unaware of how many lives he is helping to save: Mephibosheth and his children, David and his children. In fact, the whole Messianic line.
