"For in Him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28)

Men

A Man After God's Own Heart...continued

The Heart of a Godly Man Second, men need to pray. Prayer includes adoring God, confessing sins, thanking Him, and praying for others. It is not simply a wish list. Prayer is a time of solitude -- just one person and God. This can be intimidating to a man who thinks he needs to be doing something. Just sitting at the feet of Jesus and allowing Him to do or say what needs to be done is the key, says Wagner.

Third, men need to fast. "I went through Bible College, seminary, graduate school. I don't remember ever hearing a message on fasting," notes Wagner. Nonetheless, Wagner is still compelled to practice the disciple. "I am often defined as being more hungry for the things of this world than I am for God and that it is through the discipline of fasting that God teaches me exactly where my heart is and that I'm not hungering and thirsting after righteousness," he says. Through fasting, men can also hear God in a new way, adds Wagner.

Along with reading, praying, and fasting, Wagner also adds tithing and evangelizing as important to a man's spiritual life.

Wagner warns men not to simply go through the motions of being godly. Being truly godly is for every man, he says. "What I want men to understand is that to every man who knows Jesus Christ as Savior, God says,' I want to call you a man after my own heart. I want you to be a godly man.' And it's available to everyone, regardless of how much you think of yourself or how little you think of yourself. It is really for any and all who'll call upon His name."
