Births up 25%
(IsraelWire-8/1) Shaare Zedek’s Woman and Infant Center has only been
operating for a year, and it’s already chalked up 25% more births than took
place at the hospital in the year before the Center opened.
The Harry, Judith and Leonard Wilf Woman and Infant Center opened May 31,
1999, on the ninth floor of the hospital, dubbed “Charlie’s Floor” in honor
of the late Charles Bendheim, the long-serving Chairman of Shaare Zedek’s
Executive Committee.
From June, 1999, the Center’s first full month of operation, to May 2000,
the Center recorded 7,865 births. That’s 25% more than the 6,291 births that
were recorded during the previous 12 months at the hospital.
The Center hit its peak in January, traditionally the busiest month in the
hospital’s delivery room, recording 740 births, equivalent to one birth an
hour, and 39% over January 1998’s total.
“We expected to attract many more women because of the quality of our new
facilities, we just didn’t think it would happen quite so fast,” says Prof.
Jonathan Halevy, the hospital’s director-general. “Clearly, the word has
gotten out.”
More babies are born at Shaare Zedek than at any other Jerusalem-area
hospital.
