Answering the Call

Brothers and Sisters of the Fly Rod:

When I last wrote, some of you were considering answering the call to start out on the path of fly fishing. I am sure that you have discovered that you need some equipment for this work. Fear not the cost, "as the Lord WILL provide for ALL that you need" (if this works for you at the local fly fishing shop, or, you have GODΉS Master Charge #, get ahold of me right away. I could be with my brethren in your village, say, tomorrow at the latest). The alternative is perhaps that God has provided you a job, and you are gonna have to work for the stuff. Remember - " HE will never give you more that you can bear."

The first thing that you are going to notice when shopping for Holy Items is the price spread, not to mention the sheer numbers of different items. Thy rod and thy staff, and a good reel, are essential. Outfit yourself with great care. What does the Good (fishing) Book say about this very thing? "While many are there, ONLY ONE is chosen." Sad, but true, fellow believers. Pray for guidance in this, as there are many pitfalls made by those of the dark world. Keepeth a clear mind, "--as good works last forever, thou should knoweth that a good sale at the local fly shop does not". I should add that if you value the rod too much, how can you afford thy staff and reel? (just a word to the wise, huh?)

IF the LORD hath ordained you to be practical,or, as it may be, the spouse (but only in the spirit of doing HIS work, of course) is the one advising you, Œtwoud be wisdom to hear. Another of the great Mysteries is this, and I will refer to it often, " While the price has already been paid (unless you used a credit card), the fish knoweth not what value is thy rod." A loose translation is: the fish do not care! Tis better to be equipped with the proper tools, rather than the most expensive (for now). A good fly rod, with a good guarantee, need not cause one to suffer overmuch. Same for the reel.

While there are many choices, the right rod is going to depend on which of the Lords creatures you have been called to minister to. The most common of these is trout. A nine foot rod in a four or five weight (indicates the strength- sort of) should be able to make a good presentation ( like a good sermon ) and be able to handle whatever the minions (trout) give you, in addition to leading same on the right path (to your hand). A good sermon can appeal to many, but counseling individuals on a personal level requires that your rod be supple yet possessing an inner strength. "Spare the rod and spoil the fish." "OneΉs mate should compliment his/her life" This is exactly the case with the fly reel and the fly rod. A good reel should be sturdy, well made, reliable and, above all else, affordable. ( WeΉre discussing fishing stuff only here. Marriage counseling is on a another page and requires a different fee scale!) Most fly reels for trout are usually simple and have few features. The only important feature is the so called "clicker drag". To many who are only beginning the journey, the true purpose of the clicker eludes them. The clicker is activated whenever line is being taken from the reel (on most models). When the clicking noise becomes loud and rapid, it means that a fish is on, and, more importantly, alerts any other fishermen in the area to this fact. Fly fishing is a dignified sport, and, as such, those of us who are successful would never resort to calling attention to ourselves like many an unrepentant "worm dunker" by screaming "FISHHHHH ONNNNN!!!!" "PRIDE GOETH BEFORE A FALL", but did you make the reel? NO! Exactly. Dignity is a delicate thing.

Brothers and Sisters, the hour is getting late, and it is the time when GodΉs finned creatures will be rising to dry flies, and I must be there to minister to them. I can but do what I am called to do.
